Opera North’s newest interpretation of this ancient myth is placed within a British suburban back yard.

Project Details

Designer: Leslie Travers

Client: Opera North

Location: United Kingdom

The set is designed and built in false perspective and consists of a three-tiered garden with pond and patio area, bordered by adjustable fencing. The upper tier is dressed with an artificial scenically treated lawn. The fences on both sides have opening and removable sections to allow access for set items and cast. Upstage there are three scaled-down terrace houses with pebble dashed walls and tiled roofs, complete with smoking chimneys, drainpipes, and guttering. The windows and doors have backlit printed lightboxes. Scott Fleary also built a bespoke kabuki drop bar for one scene change.

This touring set is designed to fit a range of venues with differing proportions with both flat and raked stages.

Date of job completion/airtime: 4th October 2022
